We're off! Palace get us underway, attacking from left to right.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Premier League game between Manchester United and Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
There’s plenty for Jose Mourinho to smile about his side head into what should be - on paper, at least - a relatively routine win for them. Palace have struggled terribly since the start of the season and were mercilessly thrashed 5-0 by Manchester City in their last outing, something that will no doubt have filled the Red Devils full of confidence ahead of this afternoon’s clash.
The two Manchester clubs remain the only teams yet to be beaten in the league this season, and they currently sit tied on 16 points at the top of the table. United have won five of their six Premier League games as well as both of their Champions League group stage clashes, and with Liverpool coming up next, they’ll be aiming to put three more points on the board this afternoon.
As for Palace, there’s been very little - if anything - for them to smile about so far. Frank de Boer’s reign in charge lasted just four league games, and despite the Dutchman making way for Roy Hodgson, the Eagles remain rooted to the foot of the table. Not only are they yet to pick up a single point but haven’t even managed to find the back of the net, a task that has become even more difficult due to the injury to Christian Benteke.
Palace’s thrashing at the hands of City saw them set a new, and unwanted, record, as they became the first ever English side to lose their first six games of the season without scoring. With Chelsea to come after today’s tough clash, things may end up getting worse before they get better for the south London side, who are in danger of falling even further behind the rest of the pack if they aren’t victorious soon.
If their dreadful start to the season wasn’t bad enough, Palace’s recent record against United makes for grim reading as well. Seven of the previous eight league meetings between the two sides have ended in victories for the Red Devils, with Palace’s last league victory coming way back in May 1991. It’s been even longer since they won here at Old Trafford, with that success occurring in December 1989.
There’s just under 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
Manchester United substitutes: Romero, Darmian, Blind, Bailly, Herrera, Lingard, Martial.
Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Valencia, Smalling, Jones, Young; Matic, Fellaini; Mata, Mkhitaryan, Rashford; Lukaku.
Jose Mourinho has decided to make just one change to the United side that started the 1-0 victory away to Southampton last weekend, with Chris Smalling coming into the starting line-up to replace Eric Bailly, who drops to the substitutes’ bench.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Crystal Palace XI (4-2-3-1): Hennessey; Ward, Sakho, Delaney, Van Aanholt; Milivojevic, Cabaye; Townsend, Puncheon, Schlupp; Sako.
Meanwhile, Palace boss Roy Hodgson has made four alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Scott Dann, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Benteke making way for Joel Ward, Damien Delaney, Jason Puncheon and Sako, the latter of whom is set to make his first league start for the club since April 2016.
HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 2-0 CRYSTAL PALACE
It's been a relatively comfortable afternoon so far for United, who have caused Palace all sorts of problems every time they push forward. As has been the case in most games this season, the visitors have looked all over the place at the back, with Ward and Van Aanholt particularly struggling out wide. At the other end, Sako has barely had a sniff on goal, meaning that the Eagles are only 45 minutes away from going yet another Premier League game without scoring.
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 4-0 CRYSTAL PALACE
Another game, another heavy defeat for Palace, whose struggles continue to show no sign of ending any time soon. Coming to Old Trafford was always going to be tough and that proved to be the case, with the home side easily managing to leave with another well-earned victory. It's one that has moved them to the top of the table, marginally ahead of City heading into their big clash away to Chelsea this evening.
