Palace get this Premier League game under way. Olise with the first touch.
Hello and welcome to the live commentary for the Premier clash between Crystal Palace and Brighton and Hove Albion at Selhurst Park.
Palace have had a difficult start to 2023, with Patrick Vieira’s side failing to win any of their five Premier League games this year. Collecting just two points in that time, Palace will be looking to avoid their fourth defeat in six games after losing to Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United. Six points above the relegation zone, their last victory at Selhurst Park came back in October, with Odsonne Edouard scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over Southampton.
As for Brighton, they will be looking to extend their unbeaten run in the league to five games. Losing to league leaders Arsenal in their final fixture of 2022, wins against Everton, Liverpool and Bournemouth and a draw with Leicester have seen the Seagulls rise from eighth to sixth. Five points behind Tottenham who occupy the position above, a victory against Palace will put pressure on the north London club. However, they have failed to win any of their last six games against Palace (W2, D4).
CRYSTAL PALACE SUBS: Sam Johnstone, Joe Whitworth, Luka Milivojevic, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Eberechi Eze, James McArthur, Odsonne Edouard, Naouirou Ahamada, Jairo Riedewald.
CRYSTAL PALACE (4-2-3-1): Vicente Guaita; Nathaniel Clyne, James Tomkins, Marc Guehi, Tyrick Mitchell; Cheick Doucoure, Will Hughes; Jordan Ayew, Michael Olise, Jeffrey Schlupp; Jean-Philippe Mateta.
BRIGHTON (4-2-3-1): Robert Sanchez; Joel Veltman, Adam Webster, Lewis Dunk, Pervis Estupinan; Pascal Gross, Moises Caicedo; Solly March, Alexis Mac Allister, Kaoru Mitoma; Deniz Undav.
BRIGHTON SUBS: Jason Steele, Tariq Lamptey, Jeremy Sarmiento, Julio Enciso, Yasin Ayari, Evan Ferguson, Jan Paul van Hecke, Facundo Buonanotte, Andrew Moran.
The game is goalless at half-time with Brighton in the ascendancy. Denied three times by Guaita, who pushed away two efforts from Mac Allister and one from Mitoma, the away side thought they had broken the deadlock through Estupinan. Receiving the ball from Gross inside the box, the left-back tucked his curling strike into the top corner. However, celebrations were short-lived with VAR disallowing the goal for offside. Playing on the counter, Palace had two opportunities through Mateta, but his goal-bound attempts were blocked by Webster.
Palace have looked good in spells, but are clearly missing Zaha. The winger has scored more goals against Brighton than anyone else (eight) with the home side missing his dynamism. Ayew has been quiet with most of their attacks coming down the right through Olise. It has made them predictable, making them easier to defend against. As for Brighton, they are unlucky not to have scored at least once before the break. Starting his first game after the transfer window, Caicedo has partnered with Gross well but needs to be more careful in possession inside Brighton's defensive third.
Next up, Palace travel to Brentford in the Premier League with Brighton hosting Fulham.
