Bayern München’s win percentage (78%) and points-per-game average (2.49) are both better against Wolfsburg than against any other current Bundesliga side. They haven’t lost any of their last 15 top-flight matches against Wolfsburg since a 4-1 defeat in Wolfsburg in January 2015 (W13, D2).
Hello and welcome to this live commentary for the Bundesliga fixture between Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich from the Volkswagen Arena.
We are all set up for an intriguing league encounter today. Wolfsburg have had a topsy-turvy restart to the Bundesliga after the winter break, winning their opening two games to a combined margin of 11-0. However, a pair of 2-1 defeats to Weder Bremen in the league and Union Berlin in the DFB-Pokal has stalled their momentum somewhat. A win today against the Bayern will see them move within one point of the top six.
Bayern will be feeling the weight of expectation following their poor restart after the winter break. Julian Nagelsmann's side won against Mainz in a midweek DFB-Pokal clash but have recorded three consecutive 1-1 draws in the league to fall to second place. A win here against ex-coach Niko Kovac's side will see them leapfrog Union Berlin and return to the summit of the Bundesliga with a one-point advantage.
Three goals from three shots on target for Bayern will undoubtedly have Nagelsmann pleased at the break. The late first-half goal from Wolfsburg, though, will be a concern and he will no doubt want to ensure his side remain focused and avoid throwing away this lead. Kovac may feel encouraged by that late goal from his Wolfsburg side but the damage may have already been done in that dire opening 20 minutes. His side have looked promising and have had more shots than Bayern (nine to seven) but they will need an inspired second-half performance if they are to turn around this two-goal deficit.
That is all for today - thanks for tuning in!
Bayern, with that victory, move back above Union Berlin and sit top of the Bundesliga by one point. Wolfsburg remain seventh and are now five points behind Freiburg in sixth. Next up for both sides is Bundesliga action with Wolfsburg travelling to face Schalke on Friday and Bayern hosting Bochum on Saturday.
