Hello and welcome to the live commentary of the DFB-Pokal round-of-16 clash between Mainz 05 and Bayern Munich at the Mewa Arena.
MAINZ SUBS: Maxim Leitsch, Lee Jae-Sung, Karim Onisiwo, Marcus Ingvartsen, Stefan Bell, Danny da Costa, Lasse Riess, Alexander Hack, Brajan Gruda.
BAYERN (4-1-4-1): Yann Sommer; Benjamin Pavard, Matthijs de Ligt, Dayot Upamecano, Joao Cancelo; Joshua Kimmich; Leroy Sane, Thomas Muller, Jamal Musiala, Kingsley Coman; Eric Choupo-Moting.
BAYERN SUBS: Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka, Paul Wanner, Alphonso Davies, Daley Blind, Sven Ulreich, Ryan Gravenberch, Mathys Tel, Josip Stanisic.
Mainz are bidding to reach the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal for the first time in five years, but face a tough challenge against Bayern today. Bo Svensson's men defeated Erzgebirge Aue and Lubeck to reach this stage of the competition, securing 3-0 victories in both ties. Mainz are in decent form heading into the contest after crushing Bochum 5-2 last time out. Bayern ran out 6-2 victors in their Bundesliga meeting earlier in the season, so Mainz have to be better in this clash to advance.
MAINZ (3-4-3): Finn Dahmen; Andreas Hanche-Olsen, Edimilson Fernandes, Anthony Caci; Silvan Widmer, Aymen Barkok, Anton Stach, Aaron Martin; Leandro Barreiro Martins, Dominik Kohr, Ludovic Ajorque.
Bo Svensson will be concerned that his side have allowed Bayern so much freedom in the final third. The visitors took the initiative in the early stages of the contest and did not relent. It was end-to-end for a period, but Mainz failed to threaten. Once Bayern took the lead, they were in complete control. It's hard to see a way back for the hosts.
Bayern have been fairly underwhelming since their return to action from the World Cup break. Julian Nagelsmann's side have drawn their last three matches, including their last outing against Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend. Bayern have not won the DFB-Pokal for two years and Nagelsmann will be desperate to rectify their record in his second season in charge. They defeated Viktoria Koln and Augsburg to advance to the round of 16, but will need to raise their game against Mainz today.
Thanks for joining our commentary today. Until next time, goodbye.
Mainz are next in action on Saturday in the Bundesliga against Union Berlin on the road. Bayern are also away in their next game at Wolfsburg on Sunday.
