The match is under way!
Hello and welcome to live coverage of today's World Cup Group B clash between Wales and Iran.
A penalty from Gareth Bale helped Wales salvage a point against the USA in their opening match of Group B. Qualifying for just their second World Cup, and first, in 64 years, Rob Page’s side found themselves behind after Timothy Weah broke the deadlock in the first half before Bale struck the equaliser. With England and the US facing off later, Wales will move to the top of the group with a win.
As for Iran, they are at the bottom of Group B after losing 6-2 against England in their first match. Goals from Jude Bellingham and Raheem Sterling and a brace from Bukayo Saka gave Gareth Southgate’s side a four-goal advantage before Mehdi Taremi pulled one back for Iran. Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish both found the net to move England onto six goals before Taremi scored his second from the penalty spot. A win for Carlos Queiroz's side would move them up to second. However, Iran have never beaten a European opponent at the World Cup in nine previous attempts (D2 L7), conceding 20 goals across those games.
WALES SUBS: Danny Ward, Adam Davies, Chris Gunter, Joe Allen, Brennan Johnson, Joe Morrell, Tom Lockyer, Jonny Williams, Mark Harris, Dan James, Sorba Thomas, Dylan Levitt, Ben Cabango, Rubin Colwill, Matt Smith.
WALES (3-5-2): Wayne Hennessey; Chris Mepham, Joe Rodon, Ben Davies; Connor Roberts, Aaron Ramsey, Ethan Ampadu, Harry Wilson, Neco Williams; Gareth Bale, Kieffer Moore.
IRAN SUBS: Alireza Beyranvand, Payam Niazmand, Amir Abedzadeh, Sadegh Moharrami, Shoja Khalilzadeh, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Karim Ansarifard, Vahid Amiri, Hossein Kanani, Saman Ghoddos, Roozbeh Cheshmi, Mehdi Torabi, Ali Karimi, Abolfazl Jalali.
IRAN (4-4-2): Hossein Hosseini; Ramin Rezaeian, Morteza Pouraliganji, Majid Hosseini, Milad Mohammadi; Ali Gholizadeh, Ahmad Noorollahi, Saeid Ezatolahi, Ehsan Hajisafi; Sardar Azmoun, Mehdi Taremi.
Wales have been wasteful in the attack. Putting crosses into the box from both wings as well as free-kicks, Iran have found it easy to clear the ball away. With Moore a clear target, they must do more to find him. When the Bournemouth striker has been found, he has held up the ball well, setting up Wilson and Bale who both squandered chances. Quiet for most of the match against the US before scoring the equaliser, Bale is having a similar game today. With the score level, one moment of brilliance from him could win the game for Wales. As for Iran, they have certainly benefited from the introduction of Azmoun. The striker has been a handful for the opposition defence, creating scoring chances and unsettling the Wales defence at every opportunity.
That's all for today, goodbye.
Next up, Iran face the USA in their final match in Group B, with Wales up against England.
Iran scored twice in stoppage time to beat 10-man Wales and keep their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stage of the World Cup alive. Wales’s best chance of the game came early on when Moore’s poked effort was pushed away by Hosseini. After that, it was Iran who dominated. Gholizadeh had a first half goal disallowed for offside before an onslaught after the break. Going close, Azmoun and Gholizadeh crashed the post within nine seconds of each other before Wales went down to 10. Bundling into Taremi outside the box, Hennessey was given a yellow card before a VAR check upgraded it to a red. From then, Iran pushed the Welsh defence and broke the deadlock in the 98th-minute. It came through substitute Cheshmi, who drilled the ball into the bottom corner from outside the box. With Page’s side committing men forward, Iran doubled their advantage three minutes later. Taremi squared the ball to Rezaeian on the edge, who dinked it over Ward.
