FIRST HALF - Australia kick off and we are underway at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex for this crucial clash!
With matches against Japan and Saudi Arabia ahead, third-placed Australia desperately need all three points this afternoon if they are to stay in touch with the top two and keep alive their automatic qualification prospects. The Socceroos breezed past Vietnam last week in Melbourne, scoring two goals in both halves to cruise to a 4-0 victory.
For Oman, who currently sit in in 4th place in the Group B standings, the equation is simple - they simply must beat Australia to keep alive any chance of reaching the playoff stage. They fought hard last week against the top of the table Saudi Arabia but were eventually sunk by a 48th minute Al-Buraikan tap in.
Welcome to Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex for the must-win Group B AFC Asian Qualifier between Oman and Australia.
HALF TIME: OMAN 0 AUSTRALIA 1 - An intense opening 45 minutes comes to an end at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex! The Socceroos had the best of the possession and scoring opportunities early and they were able to frank their dominance when Jamie MacLaren converted from the spot after Martin Boyle was brought down inside the box. Oman had their moments so this one is far from over - don't go far away, a massive second half lies ahead!
FULL TIME: OMAN 2 AUSTRALIA 2 - An action packed second half ultimately ends in disappointment for Oman and Australia with both sides having to settle for a point each. A couple of half-time substitutions sparked the hosts and they drew level shortly after the break thanks to a stunning strike from Abdullah Fawaz. Aaron Mooy fired home for the Socceroos in the 79th minute to settle some nerves for the visitors but Abdullah Fawaz made it a double when he equalised from the spot in the 89th minute. The draw ends Oman's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup and leaves Australia needing to win their last two matches to ensure automatic qualification.
