Hello and welcome to live coverage of this La Liga fixture between Real Betis and Atletico Madrid. The hosts enter this one in a quiet 13th place; but over the last few weeks, Betis have shown signs of pushing on – they’ve won three of their last six. A signature victory today over Atletico would go a long way to setting up the foundations for an improved second half of the campaign.
For Atletico, meanwhile, this is a critical game in their efforts to recover after a difficult last few months in the league. They’ve won just three games out of their last 11, but after defeating Osasuna last time out they’ll be hoping to finally put together a sustained run of form and push into the top four.
REAL BETIS (4-1-4-1): Joel Robles; Emerson, Zouhair Feddal, Aissa Mandi, Alex Moreno; Marc Bartra; Nabil Fekir, Sergio Canales, Andres Guardado, Joaquin; Loren Moron.
SUBS: Dani Martin, Cristian Tello, Edgar Gonzalez, Borja Iglesias, Wilfrid Kaptoum, Antonio Barragan, Diego Lainez.
SUBS: Angel Correa, Manuel Sanchez, Marcos Llorente, Santiago Arias, Ivan Saponjic, Mario Hermoso, Antonio Adan.
ATLETICO MADRID (4-4-2): Jan Oblak; Kieran Trippier, Jose Gimenez, Felipe, Renan Lodi; Saul Niguez, Thomas Partey, Hector Herrera, Thomas Lemar; Joao Felix, Alvaro Morata.
The players are emerging from the tunnel and kick off is just seconds away!
An entertaining first 45 closes at 0-0 despite both sides coming close with chances that hit the woodwork. Atletico started brightly with Morata having a deft header ruled out for an offside, but Betis quickly began to dominate the game. Only a brave block from Gimenez denied a close-range effort from Emerson, before Feddal rattled the bar with a powerful header from inside the six-yard box. However, Atletico were always looking for chances to counter-attack and the plan almost worked when Joao Felix set Morata clean through. It looked like a simple chance for the striker but Robles made a stunning save to tip his effort onto the post and ensure the half ended all square.
Another tight 45 minutes is seemingly in store though, with neither side willing to throw too many men forward. Atletico look largely content to sit back and wait for opportunities to break and you'd think that the half will hinge on whether Betis can engineer a goal to change their plans.
The result means that Atletico leap past Real Sociedad and move into fourth in La Liga. Betis, meanwhile, remain 13th as their inconsistent form continues.
