The players are walking out of the tunnel now. Not long to go until kick-off!
What a crazy half of football that was! Bayern Munich struck early but then were on the receiving end of a controversial red card and now, a man down, head into the dressing room a goal down to Heidenheim. The opening goal was an excellent header by Goretzka who managed to find space between the opposing centre backs and kept his header low to beat the opposing keeper. That joy would be short-lived though as, not a full minute later, Niklas Sule was sent off for a challenge on Andrich. The referee initially deemed it to only be a yellow, but that decision was changed via VAR which saw Bayern reduced to 10-men. Heidenheim then took full advantage of their, well, advantage, and scored twice in 20 minutes through a Glatzel header (26') and a right-footed strike by Schnatterer. There was more controversy as Muller felt he was fouled in his box late in the half, but his appeals were denied by both the referee and VAR. So, with the visitors leading at the half, one can only imagine what is being said in the Bayern dressing room right now.
The second half should be fascinating as Bayern will have to chase the match to try and get things level, if not more, but will surely open themselves up to the counter-attack of Heidenheim by doing so. The latter have been quite effective on the break thus far so, in theory, they have Bayern right where they want them. The hosts do inarguably boast more quality than their opponents, but can they make it count or will they be knocked out before the semi-finals for the first time in eight years?
That will do it for our coverage of this incredible DFB-Pokal match between Bayern Munich and Heidenheim! We hope you enjoyed following along, and will join us again soon!
It was trying at times, but Bayern Munich pulled off the victory and will be hoping to convert that momentum into a win when they face Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker at the weekend. That match will certainly be one to watch as well as the winner could well wind up being the Bundesliga champions come the end of the season. As for Heidenheim, they will need to recover from this loss quickly as they prepare to face 2. Bundesliga leaders Cologne on Sunday.
